Most websites have different purposes and strategies to achieve their company goals. However, most of the websites fit roughly into one of the groups below.

Corporate identity sites These sites promote their market positioning, history and other company information to attract investors and customers. Such sites typically emphasize a firm organization’s mission, size, scope, services, revenue and so forth. Its goal is not to sell a tangible product or a service, but rather to provide information that creates or reinforces a favourable opinion about the firm in the minds of visitors.

Product or service information sites These sites provide product or service information to increase public awareness. Similar to company identity sites, it emphasizes positioning products or services more than selling them. These sites may give the business contact information, but they do not provide the interactive tools that enable direct selling.

Transaction-oriented sites These sites sell products or services online to businesses and consumers. It includes online payment facilities or offline payment to place an order or make reservations online.

Relationship-building sites The main purpose of the website is creating, maintaining and enhancing long-term relationships with customers and investors. These sites seek to educate visitors, providing information and sometimes even links to other sites for more information. Interactive elements are usually included to enable a visitor to communicate with a company representative, sign up for a newsletter, vote in a poll and provide feedback to improve the site.
