The World Wide Web, no doubt, is now a very powerful medium. This is due in large part to the fact that people can access it for free, as long as they are propped in front of a computer with Internet connection. Add to that the fact that it is world wide, meaning, it spans countries, borders, seas, even regions and continents. But what really made the World Wide Web, otherwise known as the Internet, largely popular is the fact that it is known as the home for websites. The websites are actually like homes, the addresses one go to whenever they are in need of a particular kind of information.
Each website has a specific topic or target audience to cater to. There are websites intended for those who would want to research stuff, and these are called search engine optimization (SEO) or search engine websites. Examples of these websites are Google, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Answers.com, and Ask.com. There are also websites that are for people who would want to make friends, search for long lost friends, or else, find dates, and these are called social networking websites. Examples of these websites are Facebook, Friendster, and Hi5. And, there are websites that cater to the whims of writers as well as those people who love to keep journals and diaries. These are called weblog sites, or blog sites, and some examples are Multiply, Blogger, and WordPress. Still other websites are meant for merchants as well as those who want to peddle stuff, such as Amazon.com and eBay.com.
Building a Website
When coming up with a website, one would need to know about the most common dimensions of websites. These could serve as a guide especially for first timers in the business.
Actually, the standard dimensions for websites vary depending on what the site is supposed to be for as well as the owner's preference. Some prefer a website that could fit on a computer screen that has a resolution of 800 by 600, or websites that have a width that does not exceed 760 pixels. Some keep the dimensions within 400 pixels, to be on the safe side. But if we were going to ask the seasoned web experts themselves, they will tell that dimensions that range on 760 pixels is already a good start up for websites.
In the meantime, when building websites that are meant to be surfed using Internet ready mobile phones, the dimensional requirements will vary of course as screen size is much smaller.
