Website Usability - 4 Tips
By Joe Fuller

You want your website to be as functional and visitor friendly as possible. After all, it's there for them to use for their benefit, so they need to be able to get around it and use its functions as easily and effectively as possible.

1 Font size. Check that this is suitable for reading. Large blocks of text are off-putting. Rather, try to have as much white space round your text as you can. If you have long lines of text, then increase the size of the text. The font size, obviously, needs to be big enough to read easily. For example, 10 point in Verdana looks neat but on a screen is too much of an eye strain.

2 Help visitors find content. If you have many pages on your site and you're still building it, there might be difficulty for visitors to find a particular article. Help visitors to do that without any irritating problems. You could have an on-site search engine, your own or, perhaps, Google's(TM). An alternative is to have a glossary of terms used on your site with links to related pages. Finally, you could index your articles so that a simple alphabetical search is all that's needed.

3 Fast loading. Visitors will no longer be willing to sit in front of their screens for very long waiting for your site to load. They expect a quicker response. Make sure your site loads fast by avoiding lots of graphics, especially with large file sizes. Try to have the site loaded within 10 seconds. Visitors appreciate as instant an access as possible.

4 Links. Lots of pages means lots of links. These might be to external sites or internal links to other pages on the site. Whichever they are, they have to be live. Dead links cause frustration. Imagine there's a link to what looks like a place with just the information you want. But it's dead when you click it. You may not trust that site much more, particularly if other links are also dead. Try using software which will tell you when links have died. In any case, always check them before you upload the page.
