Popularity has always been the driving force of success through out the history of mankind. Creating popularity on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites opens the door for money and skilled manipulators to sell their wares. When popularity and text are manipulated finding the truth of what you are looking for becomes very difficult.
Do the search engines require us to manipulate their system?
For example if I decide to publish this article on my site, on Hub Pages, EzineArticles and Word Press. I am told the search engines will know that the article is duplicated. It will not be shown or get rankings because it is duplicated. To overcome this I am told the content has to be altered to be accepted at each of these websites by the search engines. In other words it has to be manipulated by myself or someone else to gain acceptance by the search engines. This of itself creates huge volumes of useless text and information that is repeated over and over. Are advertisers prohibited from running the same duplicate add on different TV stations.
Publishers and individuals operating a business could serve the customers of the internet in a much better fashion by focusing on specific content with substance rather than encouraging manipulation of existing content.
The internet is a very unusual place where search results are returned based upon the amount of text, age of the text and popularity often compromised with manipulation. When I do a search I am looking to find information relevant to my search but often irrelevant or even old information is returned from my search.
The internet originated upon information, information, and more information which is great. But when the information becomes manipulated by everyone from the publishers to the search engines it becomes self defeating. The more information with out standards the harder it is to find what a person is looking for. This adds tremendously to the confusion and the desire not to be involved.
Putting up a new website and getting any kind of ranking is very difficult and nearly impossible for most common hardworking people and businesses. Many people I know despise the internet because it is really a horrible experience trying to figure out what is being said or even finding what they want.
The internet excels as a great place for email, social networking, finding specifics. But when comes to finding reputable businesses with current information, it is surely lacking.
Apple is by far a leader in making things easy with the creation of the iPod and iPad. The Droid and other devices also provide easier navigation with a picture or a phrase identifying a link to look for. To accommodate this new technology like the iPad, websites will have to be picture oriented with limited text providing specific information. This will make every one's web experience more pleasurable.
A picture with a word or keyword phrase connected to another picture leading directly to the information being searched is the fastest way to find information. This manner is not search engine friendly so it will be driven only by its popularity. But it will afford a user the ability to find what they are looking for in the shortest period of time.
