The Simplest Path to Creating Your Own Website
By Colin Reay

Creating your own website can be a bit overwhelming - there are dozens of things that you will need to work out. From the layout to the content to the design, you will have your hands full for a few weeks making everything go smoothly.

To get started, you will need to either purchase a domain name from an online domain registry or you can choose a free web provider such as webs.com who will allow you to create a web site on their servers without actually holding any rights to the domain name. This option is ideal for people just starting out on the web and who are using it primarily as a space for friends and family. Anyone looking to project a professional image online should go the route of buying a domain and paying for web hosting.

The next step is actually creating your own website. If you have the money to spare, hiring a freelancing web designer could be the most stress-free way to ensure you get a quality site with none of your time wasted. If you are the type who likes to do it themselves, try a few different web design programs such as Dreamweaver, Wordpress, or Microsoft Frontpage. If those are too difficult for you to understand, there are many places online that will provide you with free templates that are customizable and work almost as text editors.

Always be sure to provide your target audience with the appropriate content, keeping it relevant, up-to-date, and with the correct information. There is nothing worse than a website that hasn't been updated in a while and bears very old dates or something that hasn't been properly spell checked.

The best way to get traffic to your site is through referrals from friends and family or past clients. Any other traffic will be coming from direct links that you may have through affiliates or through search engines. To get a higher ranking, submit your site to major engines such as Google or Yahoo; however, be aware that it could take weeks or even months before you'll see yourself on those search engines.
