5 Steps to Take "Before" Starting an Online Business
By Lee Page

Thousands and thousands of people stumble around the Internet every day trying to figure out how they could start an online business. And you know what, there's no shortage of gurus stepping up with answers.

Internet marketing is definitely a growth industry. If you have any doubt about that, just Google "online business." That should get you around 28,000,000 hits! Yep, that 28 Million.

OK, so how does a prospective internet business owner go about sorting out all of the competing information and decide on a course of action? Here are 5 Steps every person thinking of starting an online business should take before actually starting an online business:

  1. Educate Yourself - spend several weeks educating yourself about the various types of online businesses. These include online stores, pay per click marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing, classified ads, online auctions, and many more. If you don't know what these are, then your not ready to start. Familiarize yourself at least generally with all of these options.

  2. Set Your Budget - You need to determine what kind of an operating budget you have at your disposal. That will have a clear impact on your choice of business model for your online business. The beauty of an online business is that you can literally get started with little or no cash, assuming you have a computer and an Internet connection available.

However, the more cash you have to invest in your online business, the more initial advertising you will be able to do, and initial cash might also enable you to outsource some of the work that needs to be done. This could free up your time for the important job of marketing your business.

  3. Product Selection - What will you sell? Will you sell a product you created, or will you sell someone else's product? Will it be a tangible product or will it be an information product?

  4. How Will You Get Paid? - If you decide to sell a product you created, you must determine how you will make your sales, and what company will process your orders and collect the money from your sales. If you are experienced and have a sufficient budget, you can do all of this from your own website, but most smaller online business owners choose to engage an online payment processor. Companies such as Paypal, Clickbank and 1ShoppingCart all off payment processing online.

  5. Choose Your Online Support - If you're starting a new online business and you don't have years of experience, you will need to engage the services of people or companies who do have a great deal of experience and who are willing to share that experience with you.

Making sure you have the right support team will help you avoid the common mistakes new online business owners frequently make. It will save you months, if not years, of time that you might otherwise spend trying to figure out what to do and how to do it. In short, having the right support team behind you when you start your business goes a long way toward insuring your success.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are millions of people willing to sell solutions to new online business owners. You can spend a lot of money, some of which will be well spent and a lot of which will be wasted.

This all comes back to tip number 1 - Educate Yourself! Do your research. Check out your prospective support partners before you buy their products or services. What's their reputation online? How long have they been around? What experience do they actually have running successful online business. These are all important matters to research before you spend any of your money.
