How to On-Site SEO Your Website
By Emmanuel M. Ruthe

On-Site Optimization is the key to successful SEO. You website needs to be search engine friendly at all times, with no duplicate content, good keyword choices and many more factors. It is important to have all the pieces in place so the Google and all the other search engines know what the web pages are about.

Choosing the URL of the Website

The URL of a website is a very important factor for the search engines. The most important keyword should be incorporated in the URL. If your company sells lighting products, put the word in there somewhere, like alconlighting.com. Getting more specific helps search engines, but you want to keep the domain name as short as possible, so that people can still type in it and memorize it easily.

Optimizing the Index Page

What is your website about? This is a general question you want to answer for the search engines. Pick out the most competitive keywords for the title tag, enough to make the title tag still look natural. The index page of the website is usually the most important, so you want to be sure that you pick the most important keywords and approach it as if it were a thesis of an essay. In the Meta tags, add a good description, and discretely throw in some of the keywords from the title tag. Google doesn't care much about the keyword Meta tag, but for the sake of other search engines, throw in about 10 or more keywords that you think will be in the title tags of pages on the website.

Now, after completing the title and Meta tags, be sure to back those keywords up within the content of the website. Throw in the keywords in the h1 tags, h2 tags and in the paragraphs of your content. If you do not have text on the front page add the main keywords into the "alt" tags of graphics.

On-Site SEO on New Pages

When creating a new page for the website, be sure to have unique title, description and keyword Meta tags for each web page. According to the title and description, place the keywords within content and alt tags, as done in the index page. Do not have duplicate content on any of the pages to avoid getting the duplicate content penalty from Google, which would affect your ranking.

Optimizing the Navigation for the Search Engines

Have nice and specific keyword links. Use words like "Electrical Supplies" to link to your products page instead of just using "Supplies" or "Products" and make sure to have all the content in place. Inbound links help Google understand the website, its navigation and what it's about.

Finally, the Sitemap

When the webpage is complete, submit a sitemap to Google to show Google that the site has been completed. Create a nice.XML file with all the pages and links, upload it and voila. Your onsite SEO is complete. Next step is creating quality links to your website with link building.
