Google Insights For Local Market Research
By Daniel Lesser

This tool for local search for SEO, PPC research and for spotting new trends by taking a look at the "breakout" section you can find by scrolling down to the bottom of the tool.

If you haven't put the tool through its paces, then Do it now! Put this to use for better traffic from the search engines today.

What Google Insights for Search is is a service by Google which is similar to Google Trends. It provides insights into the search terms Google users have been putting into the Google search engine. It differs with Google Trends as Google Insights for Search gives a visual representation of regional interest on a country's map. It shows top searches and rising searches (break outs) that could help you with keyword research. Results you get can be reduced down to categories which are shown for each search terms.

Summary of the main benefits:

  • Ability to see where Google users are searching for any keyword, which will allow you to know what local markets you would want to focus more on (Country, Town).
  • Ability to see the articles which correspond with different spikes in the graphic. Analyse these articles and use that information to learn about your market.
  • Ability to see from 2004 the trends evolve and draw conclusions based on these trends. For example if you had been to search for the keyword "tourism" you'll notice that the trend is on the way down. This doesn't mean that Google users are stopping searching on the web for tourism, they just got more specific with their searches.
  • Within the results are regions (indicating the highest search volume), giving related searches and rising trends. When you click a region or related term or rising term you get to see different results that relate to your selection. So you're not just going to see that there is a trend with the searches but you will be able to see for particular related terms and particular regions where search terms are trending up. This is very helpful to keep one step ahead of your competitors. There is no point in ranking for keywords that are trending down? Look for the trends that are rising and stay out on top.
  • Ability to incorporate different tables within the results in your iGoogle. Under each table there is a Google icon with a + sign on it. Why would you want to add a table to your iGoogle? For example you can analyse the actual rising terms which relate to a particular area and search term. And that is how you stay on top.
