Internet Marketing Turns to Poker
By Nick Pateman

3 years ago online poker sites were estimated to earn over $300,000,000 a month and now the industry is valued at $60 billion. $300 million doesn't come from a few thousand players, it comes from tens of millions of players and each one having money to spend. Online poker has been responsible for its unprecedented boom over the last 5 years and it's certainly in no mood to start slowing down. Thanks to the internet, this growth has been aided greatly and has made it easy for you, as a webmaster, to mass publicise your business. Poker players don't just have interests in poker; they're like anyone else and share common interests and tastes that don't require your campaign to be poker related. The one thing they don't share is their willingness to spend.

Some websites have used poker to help gain traffic to their site whilst also benefitting the webmaster who visits. Sites such as pokerisrigged.com have created a league table whereby players who have even played just one tournament, will get their link posted on the front page under their name. The winner of each weekly tournament will also have a link put up for at least one week. The better you do in the league, the higher your link will be placed, resulting in more Google "link juice". The site also allows you to post signature links to your website for advertising as long as your posts are "non-spammy". Of course these links will be incredibly profitable if your site is entirely related to poker, but the benefits of even an unrelated site are truly astonishing.

The largest site in the online poker world is PokerStars.com. This is a site with over 150,000 players seated at any one time. The site allows you to display an image as an avatar that will be with you whenever you are seen playing. By using this image to display your website address you will see increases in your direct traffic from players interested in your avatar. If you're incredibly smart, you'll be able to create an image that goes viral and spreads throughout the poker community. This has been done by intellipoker.com and has resulted in a remarkable increase in traffic. Besides imagery, you are also able to advertise in the chat boxes provided.

There are more and more ways a webmaster can promote their site using poker software and related websites. The potential conversions from marketing to the millions of players online have barely been touched.
