By Andrew B. Walker

Finding free online jobs is daunting to the beginner but is actually very easy when few a simple steps are followed. Promoting your abilities over the internet is the fundamental skill for all online employees.

What is a Portfolio and Why Do You Need One?

Establishing an online portfolio is a fundamental skill which most successful online employees posses. A portfolio is either a website or just a page where you showcase what you can do.

You can create a blog on a free hosting site such as Squidoo or; a relatively inexpensive WordPress website is simple to create. Even if you have limited internet experience, this is a very straight forward process.

There is plenty of information you will find through Google when you search for "how to set up a blog".

If you want a slightly more complex and more professional website it is recommended that you host your own. You will need to buy a domain name; this will cost you less than ten dollars from Namecheap.com. Then you will need to get it hosted by a provider such as Hostgator. They will charge you 5-6 dollars a month.

You can set up an email account with them, have multiple pages and own total control over the content and layout of your site. This also shows off a level of technical proficiency and commitment.

Blogs and Forums

You should be blogging! Keep your website interesting and dynamic by regularly posting new content. Think about your ideal business client when you write your blogs. What part of you would you like to promote?

Generally blogs for employment purposes should be more professional and formal than a typical personal Facebook page. Compile email addresses together to create a list of contacts from previous or current employment. Keep your list up to date with occasional emails about your working situation.

Advertise Yourself

A good online directory to place your ad in is Sologig. Search for other directories particular to your niche market. There are plenty out there and over time you will easily learn which ones to concentrate on.

Running a Google AdWords campaign is a good idea. Google searchers are directed to your site or blog where they can view your profile. Once people are visiting your site you can work out your conversion rates and hopefully get some feedback.

Trawl Job Sites

Listings for online jobs appear on many job sites. A good one to start with is eLance.

Employees often have to bid against each other in a competition to offer the cheapest rate. This is great for the employer.

There are many great ways to market yourself across all the different industries. If you want to write articles, show off how you can write. If you paint of take photographs; create an online display. If you design websites create a display website.
