E-Mail Marketing - The Problem of Advertising Online
By Tina L Douglas

In today's world, the Internet is a "must have" in homes, offices and schools. The Internet has been used for various reasons. Students who wish to do research and have no time to go to the library can easily search information on-line. With the use of search engines like Yahoo, MSN, and Google, they can access thousands of websites that contain the information they need. Students aren't the only people who benefit from the Internet. Huge companies have accepted the fact that the Internet can be a very useful tool in their company. By using emails or chat rooms, information and connecting with people around the globe can be done without leaving the office. If the boss wants to put out a memo or a message to everyone in the office, instead of leaving it in the bulletin board, he or she can easily send it to all their emails. We can say that the Internet has made life for everyone more convenient but in exchange for the convenience people feel, there are also a few inconveniences that may occur.

Marketing a product/s is one of the most costly things to do in a company. Companies spend millions to promote the service or product they have developed because they want everyone to know what it is all about. With the use of the Internet nowadays, corporations have found a way to make marketing less expensive and endorse their product or service faster and in a more efficient way. The marketing tool that these corporations use is "E-mail Marketing". This has been the easier way because it won't cost as much and it saves them a lot of time. By sending their service or product into the worldwide web, people from different countries can read what these companies offer. In the olden days, it would cost millions to reach out to different countries and endorse but now companies don't even have to break a sweat in order to do it. The problem isn't want companies are selling but it's the number of times they do it. When you open your inbox, you may have noticed a barrage of advertisements from companies that you may have heard or may not have heard about. This Internet occurrence is called "Spamming". Spamming refers to the sending of unwanted messages on-line to a large number of people. The problem of "spamming" is not only its inconvenience because it adds to the junk in our emails but there are some spam messages that contain malwares that may damage your computer. By clicking on the message or advertisement, it invites the different malwares into the user's computers, which we all know is a huge nuisance to any Internet user.

Fortunately, companies have developed certain programs that detect messages that enter into the worldwide web. The programs filter messages and see if it may be considered as a spam message or not. The only problem is that there are occurrences where in messages are mistakenly thought out to be a spam message, when in reality they are not. This might be a problem Internet users have to live with for now.

Email marketing may be a cost efficient way to promote a companies' product or service but it can also be a huge annoyance to people. For now, people have to live with the endless Internet advertisements they receive and just hope that one day there will be a program that can stop "spamming" completely.
